If the blues were just a shuffle, our annual waterfront fest would carry as much sizzle as a cold can full of month-old bacon grease.

Thankfully, festival organizers -- talent coordinator Peter Dammann in particular -- hold America's indigenous art form in high regard and spend considerable time mining even the slightest veins of rootsy goodness.

Herewith, our best picks. (For performance times and stage locations, see the schedule.)
It's always best to sample the homegrown: Sure, we deliver a hugely successful blues festival once a year, but it's our army of local and regional talent that plies this blues thing night after night in clubs and on stages throughout the area. Pay your big-stage props to acts such as:

Lloyd Jones; Mary Flower; Eugene's Jerry Zybach; "King" Louie Pain; Sweet Baby James; Soul Vaccination; Johnnie Ward and his Sharkskin Revue; the mighty women of the Between Friends aggregation (Linda Hornbuckle, Duffy Bishop, Ellen Whyte, LaRhonda Steele, Lady Kat, Janice Scroggins, Myrtle Brown and Lisa Mann); Bill Rhoades and his Party Kings; the DK Stewart Band/Soul Survivor Horns; the Insomniacs; Too Slim; Ken DeRouchie and company; David Vest; Rick Welter and every other act that's pounded out a million blues tunes 12 bars at a time.

Get ready - on Saturday night, the 10-piece Portland Band, Soul Vaccination infuses Winterfest's Stage with a generous serving of gourmet ear candy in the Main Festival Tent. This stuff is not just soul - it's soul with urban sophistication and power of a group of players with a wide range of professional credits in jazz, film, USO tours, television, theater, classical music and gospel.
The line up includes members who've played with such luminaries as Body and Soul, the fabulous Linda Hornbuckle Band, Duffy Bishop and Nu Shooz among many others. Over 10 years Soul Vaccination has appeared as a main stage act at the Portland Bite Festival, the Oregon Spring Beer and Wine Fest, the Coastal Rhythm and Blues Festival and has graced the stages of many other regional venues. But, for fun and profit the band continues to also play regular weekly shows at the hottest nightclubs in the Portland metro area.
Expect the best of '60's, '70's and '80's soul/funk/jazz/R&B from this group. The repertoire includes hits from the likes of Earth Wind & Fire, The Commodores, Kool and the Gang, Tower of Power, Stevie Wonder, Aretha and more.
And expect a party - that's what you'll get with sizzling Soul Vaccination's sparkling vocals, airtight rhythm section and powerful horn driven delivery. It will Shake you.

Entertainment at The Bite of Oregon has changed over the years,
and it remains one of the best bargains in music. From
up-and-coming locals to international headliners, there are
choices for all listeners, from tunes for tykes to hard-rock
anthems. This year, the offerings of aural and visual treats
have grown to include theater and dance, as well as the
customary array of local, regional and national talent. Below
are 10 picks, though you're sure to find a treat on every stage,
depending on your tastes. All the staged entertainment is themed
this year, based on genre and/or mood, so adjust your ears
accordingly.
Heavy Metals: Brass will be blasting as the longtime grit of the
Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the funky grooves of Soul Vaccination
hit the main stage, both featuring horn-powered, danceable tunes
(6 p.m. Saturday, A&E Main Stage).

At this time of taking stock and giving thanks, the Bite team at Special Olympics Oregon extends their gratitude for your participation is the 2005 Bite of Oregon.
 
This year’s Bite of Oregon was a tremendous success in so many ways: Promotion and media were everywhere; 60,000+ visitors attended from around the state and the world; and Oregon’s diverse regions were represented by remarkable restaurants, wineries and performances. Best of all, with your help, significant funds were raised to support our state’s special athletes.
 
Each year the Bite showcases nearly 100 regional acts to celebrate “Oregon’s Best” music. We thank you for being a stellar representative of all the great acts that call Oregon home.
