Johnny Sanders Medical Benefit Sunday, Sept. 27

A benefit concert will be held, Sunday, Sept. 27 for renowned Portland musician Johnny Sanders. The talented keyboardist has been diagnosed with liver cancer.
The benefit will be held from 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Sept. 27 at the M&M Lounge in Downtown Gresham, on 5th and Main. (137 N Main Ave Gresham, OR 97030)

Proceeds from the concert will help Johnny with medical bills. According to fellow musician, friend and event organizer, Lena Braxton, Sanders began his career in the ’60s, playing at the famed Cotton Club in Portland, with such acts as Big Mama Thornton, Albert Collin, Thara Memory, Major Lance and The Ballads, among others. Although Sanders played for many different bands over the years, he is said to be inseparable from his “twin” younger brother Jimmy Sanders, with whom he made music for years. Most recently, the elder Sanders played in Nashville at B.B. King’s club.

I’m totally psyched to have another show with the serious soul and funk of Soul Vaccination! This fixture in the Northwest music scene has been bringing you the greatest Soul standatrds for years. And they do it quite well, thank you. The band features the mighty Hammond B-3 organ playing of Louis Pain as well as the precision guitar playing of Max Rees. Handling the bass is Leah Hinchcliff, while Edwin Coleman III keeps the time on drums. Jeannine Wiggins and Mark Wyatt share the vocal duties. And Lewis Livermore and Dave Mills carry the backbone sound of the Soul Vax horns on trumpets with Mary-Sue Tobin and Gary Harris on saxophones. We’re still celebrating the release of their new CD, Souled Out at Jimmy Mak’s. Trust me people; this one will wear you out! There is no doubt that this show will blow the roof off of the club, so don’t miss out!
