In July, 2011, Louis “King Louie” Pain and his wife Tracy arranged for Louis' old friend, former T.O.P. guitarist Bruce Conte, to play a series of engagements in Portland. Those gigs included a date at Jimmy Mak's with Soul Vaccination that produced a live CD, "What Is Hip?”. Now, Bruce will be playing with Soul Vaccination again, but this time the occasion is a concert & auction to help raise funds for Bruce's leukemia treatment expenses.
As an insulin-dependent diabetic, Bruce has long had health issues. But since being diagnosed with leukemia last year, matters have become more serious. So Louis and Soul Vaccination bandleader Dave Mills, along with Soul Sisters Productions--the producers of the “What Is Hip” recording project--have teamed up to organize this benefit for Bruce. A very special guest is flying down from the Bay Area to participate: legendary Tower of Power & Santana keyboardist Chester Thompson. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear an amazing concert while supporting one of the all-time great funk/blues guitar players! They'll also be able to bid on some wonderful items; an auction will be held each night at about 9:30 pm.
Bruce started playing in bands in his hometown of Fresno, CA in his early teens, including Common Ground, which included Louis' keyboard teacher. Louis & Bruce went on to play together and share a house, and they stayed in touch over the years. In 1972, Bruce joined Tower Of Power, remaining with them for seven years and seven CDs, including the band's biggest sellers. One of Bruce's signature performances with T.O.P. was his incendiary playing on “What Is Hip?”.
After leaving T.O.P in 1979, Bruce led a series of Bay Area-based bands. He then moved to L.A. and continued gigging as a leader and sideman. In 2006, he returned to the T.O.P. fold for a year. T.O.P. is now supporting Bruce in his battle against leukemia.
Proceeds from “What Is Hip?” are being administered on Bruce's behalf by the Jeremy Wilson Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit musicians’ health and service organization dedicated to providing emergency healthcare assistance and improving the overall well-being of individual musicians and their families. Soul Vaccination is one of the Hottest Funk Bands in the PNW. This great band infuses the Stage with the greatest soul standards and has been a fixture in the Northwest music scene for over 14 years, bringing you tunes from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind & Fire and Tower of Power.
The band features the mighty Hammond B-3 organ playing of Louis Pain, as well as the precision guitar playing of Kerry Movassagh. On bass is Leah Hinchcliff the “Femme Fatale of Funk”, and on Drums is Edwin Coleman III, always bringin’ the funk and Groovin’ Hard. Portland’s own Jeannine “Gigi” Wiggins and Mark Wyatt share their soulful vocals styles. Legendary Soul Diva Linda Hornbuckle started singing at the age of six [6] in the Grace & Truth Pentecostal Church,in Portland, Oregon, a church pastored by her father, Bishop Howard Hornbuckle. She began thrilling audiences in the Pacific Northwest, Europe, Canada and across the U.S. just a few years later.
She has toured and/or recorded with National recording artists; “Quarterflash”, “Nu-Shooz”, and “Dan Reed”. She later became lead vocalist for the high profile Motown Revue Band, “Body & Soul” and in 1992 became the driving force for the Blues act “Linda Hornbuckle & the No DeLay Band”.
Today….Linda has taken her Gospel-Charged Soul performance and firmly established herself as The Northwest’s #1 Soul Sister. The woman with the voice from heaven has become a dynamic bandleader and teamed together with award-winning pianist, Janice Scroggins to form a duo that has thrilled audiences all over the Pacific Northwest. They released a CD called “SISTA” on the new PsycheDelta Record label created by bluesman, Terry Robb.
