Soul Vaccination is one of the Hottest Funk Bands in the PNW. This great band infuses the Stage with the greatest soul standards and has been a fixture in the Northwest music scene for over 10 years, bringing you tunes from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind & Fire and Tower of Power. The band features the mighty Hammond B-3 organ playing of Louis Pain, as well as the precision guitar playing of Max Rees. On bass is Leah Hinchcliff the “Femme Fatale of Funk”, and on Drums is Edwin Coleman III, always bringin' the funk and Groovin' Hard. Portland's own Jeannine "Gigi" Wiggins and Mark Wyatt share their soulful vocals styles. Lewis Livermore and Dave Mills carry the backbone sound of the Soul Vax horns on trumpets, with Mary Sue Tobin and Gary Harris on saxophones. We’re still celebrating the release of their new CD, Souled Out at Jimmy Mak’s. Trust me people; this one will wear you out! There is no doubt that this show will blow the roof off of the club, so don’t miss out!

SOUL VACCINATION: Bio & Performances
Max Rees - Guitar
Max Rees was raised in a musical family. His Dad and Mom both were traveling musicians, and worked on the road together before leaving the business to raise a family. Music was always a big part of the household, from Jazz to Rock and Roll.
Max studied guitar with John LaChapelle in Richland, Washington and received his BA in Music Ed from CWU graduating in 1975. John's former students included Larry Coryell.
After moving to Portland in 1975, he taught Guitar and Jazz Improv at Mount Hood Community College, and was a clinician for the Stan Kenton Jazz Clinics
in the early 80's until Stan passed away. It was a great teaching and playing experience. In 1983, Max started teaching Band in the Evergreen School District, where he still teaches today.
In Max's words:
"Performing has always been a big part of my life. I worked my way through college playing in the Ellensburg taverns. After moving to Portland, I worked in "Top 40" Bands through the 80's. I joined Salmon Dave in 1986 which became Body and Soul. We did a couple of national TV appearances for CBS and NBC on the Today Show and Pat Sajak Talk Show. My fifteen minutes of fame!"
"I am most proud of my work as 1st call guitarist for the Broadway Shows that travel to the Portland area. I have had to learn to double on Banjo, Ukelele, and Mandolin. My show credits include Sugar Babies with Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller, Hello Dolly with Carol Channing and Caberet with Joel Grey. Most recently I have performed Lion King, Hairspray, Little Shop of
Horrors and High School Musical at the Keller in Portland."
"Soul Vaccination allows me to recreate the great recorded guitar parts from bands such as Tower of Power and Earth Wind and Fire. There is also space for some great rock solos. It is a celebration of style. FUNKY!"

Louis Pain - Louis Pain Hammond B-3 / KBDS
Louis has played with many great artists locally
and nationally to name a few:
Paul deLay
Curtis Salgado
Lloyd Jones
Robin Ford
Soloman Burke
Bernard Purdie
Pinetop Perkins
Mel Brown
Linda Hornbuckle
A little more from Louis himself:
Back in my Bay Area days, I worked regularly with some well-known musicians based down there. Those included Bruce Conte, Jules Broussard, and Cornelius Bumpus. None of those musicians are well-known to many Portlanders, but the folks they worked with are (Tower of Power, Santana, Steely Dan and the Doobie Bros). I also recorded with Dorothy Morrison, lead vocalist with the Edwin Hawkins Singers on "Oh Happy Day." That was pretty cool. And I worked with some soul bands that are known to fans of obscure Bay Area funk. Those groups included Marvin Holmes & the Uptights, Eugene Blacknell & the New Breed, and Johnny Talbert & the Thangs. They don't make band names like that anymore, do they? :-)

Leah Hinchcliff - Bass & Vocals
She has been called the “Femme Fatale of Funk,” by The Olympian Newspaper. Pat Ferris of HOTBANDS says, “She is definitely the funkiest bass player I've seen in the entire country in the past 2 years! I'm also a bassist and can tend to be more critical than most people about how a band sounds, but I was more than humbled by her playing.” (www.hotbands.com)
Leah Hinchcliff has been a professional musician for over 20 years and is widely recognized as one of the NW’s premier bassists. As a first call studio musician she has recorded with many of the NW’s top recording artists including Swamp Mama Johnson, Nicole Campbell, Mark Bosnian (Nu Shooz, Body & Soul) and Lynn Frances Anderson. As a member of the successful Indie band Swamp Mama Johnson -- voted Seattle’s Best Band (1999) -- she toured North America, sold over an amazing 40,000 records (which can be heard on radio stations around the world!) and carved out her niche in the NW as a sought after and respected musician. Leah has backed up rock and roll legend Bo Diddley as well as emerging national artist Tracy Grammer.
She is equally comfortable on stage as in the studio and has been proud to participate in many festivals including The Portland Waterfront Blues Festival, The Fender/Catalina Island Blues Festival, and BluesStock (Memphis) and has also been seen on the television staple Oregon Today with Swamp Mama Johnson and folk singer/songwriter Tracy Grammer. Most weekends and several weeknights she can be heard fronting her own band, Voodoo BBQ (www.voodoobbqband.com), with her soulful voice and funky bass, or holding down the bottom edge with Portland’s premier soul band, Soul Vaccination (www.soulvax.com), and now with her renewed interest in jazz she is proud to be a member of Swamp Cactus – an original jazz project with Portland Keyboard whiz Jack Buddeke. Her original music is heard on film soundtracks, websites and radios stations around the world.

Edwin Coleman III - Drums and Vocals
Edwin comes from a musical family. His mother is a vocalist who has performed with Jimmy Durante, Gene Kelly, and Johnny Mathis. His father has performed, toured and recorded with artists such as Cal Tjader, Peter,Paul, and Mary, Vince Guaraldi, Buddy De Franco, Pete Escovedo, and the Kingston Trio. His brother is a professional bassist who recently returned to Eugene from Los Angeles.
Edwin studied piano for several years at an early age and then began studying and performing on the cello for 12 years eventually performing with the University of Oregon Symphony. Drumming was always an instrument he played and enjoyed from a very early age but never studied formally besides some lessons from his father. At the age of 19, his father hired him to play his first "paying gig" (on drums) with his trio. After that gig, Edwin decided to concentrate on playing the drums. Since that first gig, he has performed with many groups with a wide variety of styles and has performed at Lincoln Center (NYC) with an all-star Gospel Choir as well as the famed Baked Potato night club in Los Angeles. He has also performed with Charles Neville ( Neville Bro's), and Grammy-Award winning saxophonist David Murray. Along with Soul Vaccination, he performs with the Jazz trio WE-3.
His musical influences are, Cal Tjader, Willie Bobo, Ramon "Mongo" Santamaria, Bruce Carter, and Stewart Copeland.
